I recently seen a YouTuve video where the person was advocating Tap, Rack, Reassess and if necessary Bang. His reasoning was there was a case where a LEO was engaged in a gun fight with a bad guy where the bad guy gave up just as the LEO was clearing a malfunction but because the LEO was trained to Tap, Rack and Bang, the LEO shot a bad guy who had dropped his weapon and raised his hands. First, has this ever happened? Secondly, is this a realistic way to train? My thoughts are if you are performing a malfunction clearance properly, with the firearm up in the bottom of your field of view but not blocking your view of the bad guys and you continue to mononiter the threat while while clearing the malfunction that you have trained to do without having to watch to perform, you shouldn’t have to add the step to Reassess to Tap, Rack, Bang. I can see the validity of training of sometimes just doing a Tap, Rack and no bang so it isn’t just instinct to press the trigger after a malfunction clearance but we should be continuing to assess during the malfunction clearance if we are doing it properly. I would appreciate other’s thoughts on this along with whether there is any truth to there being a case of anyone shooting a bad guy that had surrendered during a malfunction clearance. Thanks in advance.
